Assassin's Creed Shadows is an action-adventure game set to be released in 2025, developed by Ubisoft Quebec and published by Ubisoft. This title marks the fourteenth significant entry in the Assassin's Creed franchise.

Taking place in 16th-century Japan during the latter part of the Sengoku period, the game centers on the age-old conflict between the Assassin Brotherhood, who advocate for peace and freedom, and the Templar Order, who seek peace through domination. The narrative is presented through the eyes of two main characters: Fujibayashi Naoe, a kunoichi (female shinobi), and Yasuke, an African samurai inspired by the historical figure of the same name. These two protagonists offer distinct gameplay styles, enabling players to approach quests in various manners.

Game Features

Assassin's Creed Shadows is an action role-playing game that focuses on the unique skills of its two playable characters. It is built on an enhanced version of Anvil, featuring dynamic lighting and environmental interactions. Enhancements include breakable objects and the capability to manipulate shadows, as well as the use of a grappling hook for parkour.

The game's expansive world, comparable in size to that of Assassin's Creed Origins, evolves through seasons that can influence gameplay (for instance, ponds and shallow bodies of water where Naoe can hide and submerge are frozen during winter).

Missions are designed to be non-linear, allowing players the freedom to track and eliminate targets; unlike previous installments, vantage points are now used to help players identify points of interest rather than to mark objectives. By default, Assassin's Creed Shadows does not disclose the precise locations of targets or key NPCs, requiring players to recruit and deploy scouts to pinpoint their exact whereabouts based on provided clues.

New gameplay mechanics include the ability to go prone and crawl, which aids players in avoiding detection and navigating through tight spaces. The character can also enter shallow water, using a bamboo stick to breathe.

The traditional 'Eagle Vision' returns for Naoe, enabling her to locate enemies and other useful gameplay elements. Both Naoe and Yasuke can activate a new mode called "Observe", which provides a quick and efficient method for gathering information about targets. This mode can also be utilized while crouching on elevated vantage points, allowing players to closely inspect newly discovered areas. By hiding in shadows, Naoe becomes invisible to her foes, whether indoors or outdoors, prompting players to extinguish lit lanterns with shurikens. Moving while crouched allows players to traverse silently across creaking nightingale floors.

Players have the option to switch between characters as they advance through missions.
